Natural Stone Maintenance

Beautiful, strong, and timeless… but porous!

Natural stone is a material known for its strength, durability, and timeless aesthetic. While it offers excellent weather resistance, it remains a porous material that requires appropriate maintenance. Good cleaning habits help preserve the appearance of your natural stone over the years. *

Regular Cleaning of Natural Stone

Basic maintenance involves keeping surfaces free of debris. It is recommended to regularly clean the stone with a broom or blower to remove dust, leaves, and other impurities. For outdoor landscaping, a water jet cleaning, at least once a year depending on climatic conditions, helps prevent dirt accumulation.

For a deeper cleaning, use a solution of water and mild detergent. Apply the solution to the surface, then gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove any residue. It is essential to avoid metal brushes, acidic cleaners, bleach, and any products intended for concrete or paint, as these products can damage the stone.

In some cases, a significant accumulation of dirt may require several cleaning methods. The use of a pressure washer can be considered, but with caution. Too much pressure, an unsuitable nozzle, or insufficient distance can damage the surface. It is recommended to first test on a small, inconspicuous area, then maintain the same pressure, nozzle, and distance throughout the cleaning.

Stain Prevention and Best Practices

Since natural stone is porous, it can absorb certain contaminants. It is therefore advisable to avoid any contact with oil-based materials or metals likely to rust, such as iron, copper, or bronze. For outdoor surfaces, natural exposure to sun and rain often helps to reduce stains once the source of dirt has been removed.

Using a Protective Sealer on Slabs and Pavers

Applying a sealer is not mandatory, but it can facilitate maintenance by limiting stain penetration. A protective coating soaks into the stone and helps preserve its appearance. Before any application, it is important to test on a small, inconspicuous area and wait seven days to observe the final result.

Here are some sealers recommended by our team:

Understanding and Managing Efflorescence

Efflorescence is a common phenomenon on natural stone surfaces. It manifests as a whitish deposit caused by soluble salts carried by water. When the water evaporates, these salts crystallize on the surface.

In the case of a new installation, efflorescence can be removed dry with a soft brush or a blower. It is important not to use water to remove this powder. Over time, this phenomenon generally disappears on its own if the moisture source is controlled, particularly by ensuring good water drainage and avoiding accumulation. The use of chemical products is not recommended.

Products to Avoid

Aggressive chemical products, especially de-icing salts, can damage natural stone and cause discoloration. It is recommended not to use these products on adjacent surfaces. This precaution also applies to interlocking pavers or artificial concrete stone, which can deteriorate or crack under the effect of salt. If a solution is necessary to limit the risk of falls in winter, it is preferable to use sand or gravel.

Maintenance of Natural Stone Walls

For natural stone masonry cladding, once again, moisture management is essential. Sprinklers, gutters, and downspouts must be properly adjusted to avoid prolonged contact of the masonry with water. Landscaping should also be designed to limit mud splashes.

Organic matter such as ivy, moss, or mold should be removed regularly, as it can cause stains or discoloration, in addition to promoting moisture retention. In the case of ivy, it is best to cut it at the base, let it dry, and then gently remove it.

An inspection of the cladding is recommended approximately one year after its installation, and then regularly thereafter. It is important to check for cracks, damaged joints, or loose elements. Cracked mortar joints must be repaired to maintain weather resistance.

Natural stone is a durable investment that retains all its beauty over the years, provided it receives the care it deserves. By adopting good maintenance habits and using appropriate products, you not only preserve the appearance of your surfaces but also the value of your property.
